The 50th Day of School is a big milestone for students, and what better way to celebrate than with a day filled with exciting, hands-on activities?! Explore Life in the 50s
Transport your students back to the 1950s by decorating your classroom with simple but fun pieces, such as checkerboard tablecloths and pop-up records. Encourage students to dress up in 1950s attire: cat eye glasses and poodle skirts for the girls, and slicked back hair and leather jackets for the boys. The parent letter can be sent home prior to the 50th Day to help families get ready with outfit ideas! Clothing pieces can be found at home or Amazon.
Now that the stage is set, explore life in the 50s with engaging activities that compare then and now. Spark a thoughtful discussion on kids today vs. kids then, compare popular items from the 50s and today, and even have students draw and write about themselves as if they lived in the 1950s!
1950s Fun
After learning all about what the 1950s looked like, students will have a blast participating in some good old-fashioned fun! Some of my favorite activities from this set include the 50 Second Challenge (how many bubbles can you blow, or how many times can you hula hoop) and the 50 Days Stronger exercises (all 50s themed) to get kids up and moving.
Other fun activities include mazes, word searches, dice games, and of course a little math and literacy. Everything is centered around the number 50 or life in the 1950s! Here are just some of the printables included in my 50th Day of School Fun Pack:
- I Know 50 Words: A fun way to celebrate vocabulary by having students list 50 words they know!
- 50 Days & Counting: Blank and missing 50s charts for skip counting and tally marks, helping to reinforce important math skills in a fun way!
- 1950s vs Today: Various writing activities perfect for comparing life in the 50s to today!
- Sock Hop Trail, Diner Dash Maze & Twist and Search: Students will love these brain-boosting activities!
- AND SO MUCH MORE!
Root Beer Floats
Perhaps the BEST part of the 50th Day of School celebration is the root beer floats! Students love to create and enjoy this tasty treat. They will learn how to make their own floats, taste-test them, and complete a class survey.

Students will not only make their own root beer float drinks, but they will also make a root beer float craft. It can be used as a how-to writing activity and doubles as the perfect 50th Day keepsake.
This simple and delicious activity is always a hit… you can’t go wrong with ice cream!!
Celebrate with a Sock Hop
No 50th Day of School celebration is complete without a little dancing. Students will love grooving to some of the music from the 1950s! The Twist is especially fun– we even watch Chubby Checker The Twist Official Music Video on YouTube!
There are other kid-friendly videos on YouTube as well, such as Jack Hartmann’s 50 Days of School song, JoJo Siwa’s “BOP!” 50s Dance Remix, and the Hand Jive Children Song which teaches you how to Hand Jive! How fun is that?! As always when using YouTube and other Internet resources, preview videos first before you show them to your class!

Whether you’re hula hooping, twisting, crafting, or sipping root beer floats, the 50th Day of School is such a fun excuse to celebrate how far your students have come!
